What's the current hottest restaurant in your city? Have you tried it out yet?
its hard to say what the hottest restaurant is in tidewater, but it could easily be my current favorite place to go: the boot. it has received quite a bit of attention from a whole bunch of different crowds because it serves great food, has a really good atmosphere, and lets bands play there. also, it serves dishes made from local ingredients. all their food comes from local suppliers around virginia. pretty awesome place.
so yeah, youre likely to see middle aged folk in business attire at tables next to some indie kids; with a spattering of families around too. its sort of strange but comfortable. classy atmosphere with heavy wood tables and chairs. rustic, solid flatware and simple plating. a bottle of cold water and bread with drinks. multiple vegetarian (and vegan) options! also, theyve got a large and excellent selection of domestic beer and wine.
as a music scene, it brings a lot of attention to growing, unsigned bands from along the east coast. the stage is alright, set up in a corner of the restaurant. more than adequate pa system. appropriate lighting and audience area once they clear out some tables near the stage. also, theres some seating outside on a patio, but im unsure whats going to happen to that once it turns cold, i dont think theyll bother enclosing it; its not large enough. they havent been open long, but i guarantee that theyll stay around much longer than their previous try as music retailer, relative theory. im excited to see what they put out on their winter menu.

If money were no object, which five luxury items would you rush right out and buy?
Submitted by lorilyn.
1. nintendo wii and games
2. 8core mac pro plus 2 30" cinema displays
3. canon eos markIII plus lenses
4. a house in san diego, ca; manhattan, ny; and dc
5. projector, speakers, reciever (found via uncrate)
thats pretty much all id ever need. id be highly inclined to switch out the camera for a fully stocked kitchen i could design should any of the houses be ill equipped.
Ever run for office? (School, club, organization, politics, etc.) Did you get elected?
well, since this has come up twice already within a week, the last time i ran for a school office was sixth grade. i was elected reporter/historian to the first sca for kemps landing magnet school. it was pretty awesome. i dont know why i didnt run for anything in seventh or eighth. or do anything with sca for the rest of my academic career for that matter. i dont really remember much about sca other than selling otis spunkenmyer cookies every day and going to the statewide sca convention of which we were the only middle school. that was also really cool. that pretty much the extent of my middle school government memories.
oh, and i suppose i "ran" for club swimming vice president and got that too. as one of the few people who paid dues and attended practice, i had a lot to say about how the club was run. unfortunately, i didnt push our president into doing anything. and since i was the only one who seemed concerned about it, it didnt go anywhere and the club disbanded after i graduated. its up again now, but its in deadlock as there is no pool time for them to meet.
What are five books that changed your life?
Inspired by Ms. Genevieve.
Lets start with the bruce coville, jeremy thatcher dragon hatcher: this was my favorite book back when i was little. it started my interest in reading, and put me further onto the path of science fiction. also, its a cute moral tale of growing up and letting go of things you love so they can grow too.
sometime in middle school, my cousin worked for random house publishing inc, and she sent us this giant tome of language known as an unabridged dictionary. it weighs somewhere around 15 pounds and holds more words than i can query. it started my love of linguistics.
also in middle school, i was forced to read a tale of two cities. and i trudged through it with the dictionary by my side. but i love this story, and it changed my life because 1.i was forced to memorize beginning and ending paragraphs and recite them in front of giggling peers and 2.it was a great example of sacrifice. i think i base much of my conscience on what i learned from this book.
then, in ninth grade, i read romeo and juliet and fell in love with shakespeare. this continued through tenth grade when i read julius caesar, and twelfth grade with hamlet. all of the little secrets, the puns, the political jabs, social commentary; it all thrilled me and set me off to write. thats why i create poetry, and its the reason i blog.
hamlet is by far my favorite of all the plays ive read, and after we covered it in twelfth, we read rosencrantz and guildenstern are dead which completely blew my mind. r&g took everything i knew about life and twisted it just enough to question it all without trying to pull the wool over my eyes. this book sparked my interest in human mentality and psychology, and generally made me question lots of things going on in life. thats why i liked it, and thats what i continue to do all the time.

What are your resolutions for 2007?
1. stop being lame
ive made large attempts to reinvent myself and change a lot of things in my life; especially in the past year. i hope to continue to do the same this year. i think im headed in the right direction now, its simply a matter of execution. i will be achieving this goal by working harder (putting more effort into classes and being more energetic with coaching), building better relationships among friends and acquaintances, and generally being more outstanding and outgoing.
2. be more smarter
working with kids in high school reminds me of how much information i used to know. sure, theyre pretty easy to impress, but the wealth of knowledge some of these kids possess is astounding. i mean, a few of them are valedictorian candidates; not to mention that they havent been letting their minds rot through four years of football and parties. besides, ive been feeling highly unbalanced with my academic knowledge
3. be creative outside of the classroom
i never seem to have time to do my own art, or i feel overwhelmed by the stuff with class so much that i dont feel like doing more. but im going to write more, draw more, and create more so that my portfolio will include stuff that im not only proud of, but stuff that i really like. stuff i feel is a better representation of work that i can do at a full potential.
What's one thing you regret not doing?
Submitted by Mr. Nice.
something ive always regretted, was being so afraid of the world. this would translate into not being more forward and taking chances at all the options ive been given. there are so many opportunities ive missed because i thought too much about something and talked myself out of giving it a shot. it still happens, but much less now. i think ive grown out of my shell and opened up quite a bit. it took me 4 years of high school and 3 years of college to become someone i think is finally headed in the right direction mentally. i only wish i had done this all when i was younger; but dont we all?
but on a more vox:qotd note, i wish i had taken the chance to learn how to surf when i was on vacation in hawaii. i think that would have been pretty awsome now, and i truly regret passing on that opportunity to just bum around the beach and bodyboard. (although i did catch some pretty decent waves that way)
What's on your Top 5 video games list?
Submitted by mileena.
5. starcraft.
great game atmosphere with never annoying background music. near even
races. zerg rushes. protoss carriers. "4v4 $$$big game hunter$$$."
4. super mario world. extensive level design. great gameplay. star road level names (far out, tubular).
3. burnout 3: takedown. driving fast, causing mayhem, and
crashing into oil tankers. if only they had reversed the "retry or
continue" response at the end of each level. and those god damned
special events with the f1 racer.
2. 007: goldeneye. 4 person multiplayer. analog control
over aiming. strafing circles. great level design. complex, pistols,
first to 10, license to kill, go.
1. final fantasy tactics advanced. i logged more (single
player) hours into this thing than possibly any other game, ever. i
played 40+ hours AFTER beating the game. and then started a new game
and played it all again. staring at that 2.5" screen for forever has
ruined my eyes.
honorable mentions:
the entire final fantasy series. great stories, creative
character design, and chocobos. throw chrono trigger in this pack since
it was also produced by square. maybe kingdom hearts.
the secret of monkey island. hilarious, crazy, immersive. a reason to bring adventure games back.
beyond good and evil. an adventure game for the new(er) generation.
shadow of the colossus. stunning visuals, beautiful character design, great gameplay. just too short, and sometimes too simple.
counterstrike. realisitic, strategic, and cooperative. +deagle hunter. +knife kill pwnage. -getting awped. -v.1.6
zelda: four swords. zelda and multiplayer? cooperative and competitive? it all makes a great game. too bad everyone needs their own gba.
star wars: tie fighter. imperial aircraft simulator = awesome. a much better space flyer than the previous rebel versions.
super smash bros. melee. near equal characters. flawless
multiplayer gameplay system. combined all those great nintendo
characters into one game. just not as groundbreaking as goldeneye. not
enough distinction among some characters.
i feel like im missing some big things. but this is a pretty good list.
