i love my wii. im borrowing a bunch of games from joe which are really cool, warioware, big brain academy, and mario party. i picked up house of the dead 2&3 which i have always loved, and it remains a good port. also, it hurts my wrist from keeping my hand tilted for hours on end. i didnt pick up the wii zapper because it looks bulky and dumb.
graphic design is going well i suppose. the visual arts center chose my design and layout for the student art magazine they put out each year. i also entered an identity system in the student art show and won a prize. so maybe i have a chance to pick up that internship in new york?
now that swimming has calmed down, i feel less inclined to swim myself. instead ive started running and picked up a free weights routine. its all new for me, which is exciting. i kind of like running. i think its a good alternative to swimming because everyone runs, and no one except mark can keep up with me in swimming. so socially its better, which makes it much easier to call people up and work out. but unfortunately that also means that im not going to ever get back up to speed in the water. hmm.
the spoon show with the walkmen and white rabbits was pretty awesome. it was really well organized and the walkmen had a good set. spoon played for near two hours, it was... really long. as much as i enjoy spoon, that was a lot of time standing on my feet. you know what i wish they played though?
one of my final projects is creating an online portfolio. its hard as crap because i have a lot of stuff, and mostly all of it is mediocre. i also decided to throw my writing up on the site, and thats very difficult for me since all of my writing is like, two years old. ive changed quite a bit and the poetry left over no longer reflects who i am and what i consider good work. but i do feel that its an important facet to understanding my creativity and may ultimately help me with getting a job.
so anyways, its kind of hard to work on this stuff when im not in lab. i dont have the programs, and the lab is open from 7am-midnight (although the guards kick us out at 11:30ish). so basically, i have to work like crazy tomorrow, and maybe i can skip the meet on saturday at ft eustis and work some more. its going to be a hellish weekend. also, im pretty sure everyone else in the world will be in the labs working like crazy too. who is ready for energy drinks, lots of driving, and dreamweaver frustration?
the portfolio is practically the only thing left for me to do for the semester. i have a final test in art history2, and a project for communication design, but im almost done with it, i spent all day today putting it together and i just have to paste it all up. i had to create a bag and a stationary system for a company i made up and create all the branding for it. ill put up some stuff next week when i stop grinding my teeth.
i finished all of my stuff for this semester. we're supposed to have finals and junk, but since im in all art classes, its all "turn in your portfolio and pick it up later." i like this. heres what ive been working on for the past while (im missing pictures of all my pastel drawings, ill get to that later; along with the uploads of my photography junk.)
::ugh. i just spent 15 minutes trying to get vox to accept another project from cg, a isometric product box. but, i dont know why it wont show up. everything i upload is saved as a jpeg, and they all come from the same computer, same program, same export settings. i even threw it into photoshop here at my own computer to make sure its a normal picture. argh!
typography: a timeline of events, or calendar. basically i created a folding flyer for my swim team, and its completely usable, so we might print up a few dozen of them. theres two per page, printed full color front and back.
and finally, my last project for type: an interpretation of my choice of text. so i pulled an old favorite, the last page from dickens' a tale of two cities. i had a really hard time at first trying to create a layout for this, originally trying to create a human figure from the text. that turned out to be too dull, and not interesting enough; so i broke it down and focused on hierarchy.
so all i have left is critiques tomorrow for the box of headphones that you cant view and the tale of two cities interpretation to the right. the only thing ive got wednesday is a pizza party!
oh, also, my type class went on a field trip last week to the comtemparary art center of virginia beach. it was alright, there was a temporary exhibit for the magna carta, which was pretty neat. but on permanant display is this GIGANTIC blown glass chandellier by dale chihuly. its pretty much the most amazing thing ive seen in a really really really long time. its like this one, but more colorful.
i also took a picture of A Disease of Language, by alan moore and eddie campbell. i had to take a picture because i wasnt able to find it through amazon search in vox.
on a more exciting note, i completed my second typography assignment! hooray! i know youre stoked. its a type specimen! youd be surprised at how long that took.
and then post to vox or facebook so i have something new to read.
its been a pretty bland day, but i managed to wipe out another assignment, i finished my INK drawing. of my shoes! i like it a lot. id almost say ink was better than pencil, its got a great feel and expression, but its so terribly unforgiving. you not only have to plan everything out ahead in detail, but you cant make any execution mistakes. as you can see, ive got some work to do with ink. fortunately, i think we're moving on to scratchboard next (which is actually just as unforgiving)
i spent all day in the computer lab today thinking about my project, and i finally decided on something decent and pulled together a simple image. you can view it here. guess what it is! if you cant figure it out, well, then let me know so i can change it before i turn it in on tuesday.
here was my process: read free newspaper provided by the virginian pilot. search newsfeeds for interesting ideas. check mail. check facebook. check more mail. load adobe illustrator, make random shapes. search newsfeeds for ideas. think about conservation. think about oil. create oil drill on top of half globe to see depleting oil reserves. check mail and facebook and mail. turn pictograph into complex idea concerning bombs, wars, and fire. drop oil idea. check mail facebook mail. search treehugger for environmental ideas. go back through archives and see article concerning cars. lightbulb!
ive been doing some cool stuff in computer graphics. im learning a lot about illustrator and how it can be used. its pretty easy actually. we've got a project coming up where i get to do my own stuff, so ill post that when i get the details and complete it.
ive got a typography assignment to create a pictograph (icon/ sign) that conveys an idea, an idea that is "modern". i cant think of anything. i was trying a few things concerning environment conservation, but they arent really panning out the way i would like. i just need to make a picture that can be immediately recognized as SOMETHING. its the "modern" and 'not already done' part thats killing me. help!
also, ive tried everything as far as communication goes, but its all a big failure. nothing works with safari, and i dont have permission to install things. i cant even update vox with safari! so that leaves me with email, gmail, and facebook messages. boooring. but i seem to check all three every fifteen minutes anyways.
the semester is almost over! im done with four out of my five classes already! just one more giant portfolio to complete and turn in. as you can see, weve accomplished quite a bit in drawing over the past few months. heres one of the last assignments. ive got two more drawings to put up, but youll have to wait until i get my portfolio back on monday, i just turned it in today. i should be completely done with school by tuesday. then i can get back into retro gaming and work on buying you all presents.
also, take notice of how awful these pictures are. clearly photography1 will be of some use. i think these came out better simply because theyre on colored paper. the less light reflection, the easier it is for the camera to focus. look back at all the other metientes drawings, they all came out pretty clear compared to that whole slew of hands on white.
